The state Department of Environmental Quality on Thursday received a $1.3 million grant as part of an effort to simplify federal funding processes.
Under the Environmental Protection Agency's new performance partnership grants, states can direct funds to environmental programs as they see fit, without time-consuming appeals to the agency.States may also designate the number of environmental programs the grants will include.
"The performance partnership agreement . . . has marked a new way of doing business working together," Gov. Mike Leavitt said in a press release. "The grant is an important next step in that process."
President Clinton last month authorized the shift from categorical grants - which would go toward individual programs - to the more inclusive multimedia grants.
Utah's grant covers just the last quarter of this fiscal year. A full-year grant would total $4.3 million.
