The Deseret News recently editorialized about "How to curb teen suicides." The suggestions offered by the editorial were to keep guns away from teens and to initiate studies as to the causes.
We already know from previous national studies that an estimated one-third of all teen suicides are related to homosexuality, and those suicides are largely caused by community attitudes that express condemnation and hatred for homosexuals.Any genuine effort to reduce teenage suicides must include plans and programs to help teenagers deal effectively with homosexuality. The Deseret News editorial ignored this aspect of the problem entirely.
If the Deseret News is truly interested in helping the community curb teen suicides, perhaps it should examine its own role in promoting anti-gay attitudes.
