The British magazine Harpers and Queen has announced that it has dropped - swish, clunk and down she goes - Princess Diana from its list of the world's 50 most alluring women.
"Mystery is an essential part of allure," said editor Fiona Macpherson. "Unfortunately, the Princess of Wales hasn't stayed aloof from the media and has rather lost that for the time being."All, however, is not lost. "She had it in the beginning," says Macpherson, "and I think she could regain it."
This year's very most alluring woman is Audrey Hepburn, who in addition to being alluring, happens to be dead.
No matter. "She epitomizes the spirit of contradiction essential to allure," said Macpherson, "elegant but carefree, worldly yet innocent, warm but elusive, and, of course, supremely beautiful."
Rounding out the top five are Ava Gardner, Julie Christie, Catherine Deneuve and Ingrid Berg-man.
