NEW CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL WILL BE NAMED JUAN DIEGO

Utah's next Catholic high school will be named Juan Diego Catholic High School in honor of the 16th century Mexican Indian who said he saw the Virgin Mary near Mexico City in 1531.

A primary school that will be part of the new school complex in Draper will be named the Saint John the Baptist School and handle preschoolers and grades K-8.Both schools will be part of a school-parish complex that will be called the Skaggs Catholic Center in honor of Sam and Aline Skaggs who are noted for their lifelong generosity to educational and charitable causes.

Since Juan Diego's Aztec name means eagle and the New Testament symbol for the evangelist John is also an eagle, the new high school mascot and symbol will be the Soaring Eagle with school colors of bronze and gold.

The four-year high school is expected to open in the fall of 1999.
