Alexander Langsdorf Jr., a noted American physicist who worked on the team that developed the atom bomb but who later spoke in opposition to the weapon, has died, hospital officials said Saturday.

Langsdorf, 83, died Friday in a hospital in the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst, Ill., of complications from hip surgery. He worked for many years at Argonne National Laboratory outside Chicago.In a 1982 ceremony in Chicago commemorating the 1945 atomic bombing of Japan, Langsdorf said he regretted mankind's use of the weapon developed by a team of physicists that he was on that was known as the Manhattan Project.

A native of St. Louis, Langsdorf is survived by his wife and two daughters.
