A 22-year-old man has been booked into the Washington County Jail for investigation of kidnapping and robbery at the Red Cliffs Mall.
Benjamin Smith, of St. George, was arrested Monday by police. He was being held in jail Wednesday in lieu of $50,000 bail.Police are investigating reports that a man accosted a ZCMI employee in the parking lot and asked for money. The 62-year-old St. George woman said she didn't have any cash, but the man found an undisclosed amount while searching her purse.
The man then ordered the woman, who was not further identified, to return to the store and go inside before he fled in another vehicle, police said.
St. George Detectives Glen Banks and Mark Brklacich said officers had been called to the mall just prior to the robbery to investigate a report of a possible stolen car and given a partial license plate number.
Police later located the vehicle and arrested the driver after finding the sum of money stolen from the ZCMI employee, a ski-type mask and a weapon similar to a screwdriver.
