The consent of the governed to the government is to take at the point of a gun life, liberty and property from individuals who act in a way that the majority has agreed is improper. What awesome responsibility, what incredible danger. Government does not create. Government does not enhance. Government does not inspire quality. Government can only help provide the "opportunity" for creation, enhancement and quality workmanship to take place.
Government could never have come up with the microchip. Government could never have engineered a fine automobile. Government cannot develop, it can only "help" reduce harm and hazard. If it is ever put in charge of the quality assurance of a particular industry, that will be the nail in the heart of that industry.If you and I agree at this point, we can move on to the next point. If not, we will be forever at odds.
In regard to the Deseret News editorial "Keep Firm Utah Standards for Commercial Child Care" of May 14, the writer was obviously a dupe of the bureaucrats in the Department of Human Services Office of Licensing. The truth is that the Office of Licensing has imposed itself to a great degree and with great detail in curriculum. It has issued a very detailed document to day care and preschool providers titled "Curriculum Requirements." It has imposed itself deeply into the area of teacher training, prohibiting traditional, tried and tested methods in favor of methods obviously patterned after "outcome-based edu-ca-tion."
Parents should not be given a false sense of security that the "state" has made sure that everything is OK. There is tremendous variety in methods for early childhood development. For the state to enforce one educational philosophy over the other is nothing short of having a state religion imposed on the people. In order for quality to rise to the top, we must never allow government to dictate standards. Centrally planned efforts like this waste time, human energy and life itself.
In the editorial, the author stated what a tragedy it would be if welfare recipients were required, if they had no other employment, to work as child-care providers. The author followed by lamenting, "What does this say about the value Utah places on poor children?" I have to ask, "What does this statement say about the value you place on the abilities of welfare recipients?" They are just poor people, they should never be allowed to take care of children. Is that what you think?
For those state and local government employees who do their best to protect my children from harm and accident, you have my heartfelt gratitude. For those who believe that government is the provider of all good things . . . I will do all I can to have your funding removed.
