A Russian militiaman guards the main gates of the British Embassy in Moscow. Russia said on Monday it would expel several British diplomats accused of running a spy ring in one of the biggest East-West espionage scandals since the end of the Cold War. Officials in Moscow have arrested a Russian who confessed to spying for Britain. "The man was seized red-handed as he was in the process of communicating with his headquarters," said Boris Kostenko, spokesman for Russia's Federal Security Service, the main successor to the KGB. A search produced "a spy's equipment," he added without elaborating. British officials refused to comment.
