BOMB SCARE CLOSES SCHOOL, SHAKES UP KIDS

School was canceled for 500 students at Franklin Elementary, 1100 W. 400 South, after a bomb scare Monday morning. Attendance was down Tuesday morning because some students were afraid to return to school, a school district official said.

School officials called police at 8 a.m. after hearing a message on the school's answering machine that a bomb would go off at 11:30 a.m., said Salt Lake Police Lt. Carroll Mayes. The children were evacuated immediately and school was canceled about 10:30 a.m., said Salt Lake District spokeswoman Sherri Clark.

A bomb squad and two dogs searched the building but turned up nothing.
