AFTER BOUT WITH CANCER, BUTLER SAYS HE'LL RETURN TO FIELD

Sidelined with cancer, Dodgers center fielder Brett Butler is not giving up.

"We're going to beat this thing. One of these days I'm going to be back out there tipping my hat, and hopefully everything will be all right," Butler said Wednesday, five days after a surgeon removed a plum-sized tumor that grew in his right tonsil. The 38-year-old Butler, who once played for the Atlanta Braves and makes his home in suburban Duluth, did not rule out a return to the playing field this season.

Dr. Robert Gadlage, who was treating Butler for tonsillitis for the past two months, said he tried to conceal his shock when he looked into his throat minutes before a scheduled routine tonsillectomy.

It took a 90-minute operation to remove the tumor. A routine tonsillectomy takes 15 minutes.
