About the same amount of wood used in a single-family home is needed to build a two-lane, 50-foot-by-24-foot timber bridge, according to bridge engineers.

Another 10,000 board feet of wood is needed to build framing and abutments for a covered bridge. Currently, there are more than 60,000 timber bridges in the United States.
