The love affair between Mary Pierce and the French fans is definitely over.
Pierce was whistled and jeered Friday as she was knocked out of the French Open in the third round by Germany's Barbara Rittner. While Pierce hurried off the court to a chorus of boos after her 6-4, 6-2 loss, Rittner got a warm ovation."You can never say the crowd is fair or not here," said Pierce, who lives in Florida but plays Federation Cup for France. "They cheer for whoever they want. It's not the first time that's happened."
Rittner knew the crowd would support Pierce if she played well.
"The crowd knows a lot about tennis," she said. "They support the player who plays well and I was playing well today."
