All parents like their young children to read.

Susanna Winder, 7, a first-grader at Chubbuck Elementary School, carries it a bit further. She has read 1,019 books in the past year."My goal is to have the children read 100 books," said Judy Sorensen, Susanna's teacher, who has parents sign off on every book their child reads.

In 12 years of teaching, she has never had a student read as much as Susanna. She encourages students to take home one book each night from her classroom library.

Susanna consistently took home five. She also was allowed to check out books by the boxload at the Portneuf District Library.

Susanna only set her sights on 1,000 books recently. Not sure she would make her goal by the end of the school year, she stepped up reading to 15 books each night.

Her mom, who has listened to most of the 1,000 books, didn't mind a bit.

"Books are an important part of our lives," Pamela Winder said.
