Israeli soldiers sit in an army vehicle after returning to Kiryat Shemona in northern Israel Monday. They had been sent to southern Lebanon Monday after Muslim Hezbollah guerrillas ambushed Israeli troops, killing five soldiers and wounding eight others in the deadliest clash in the area since April. Prime Minister Shimon Peres and the armed forces chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Amnon Shahak, met with army commanders in northern Israel following the dawn ambush. Peres was to discuss the situation later with Prime Minister-elect Benjamin Netanyahu. Meanwhile, the Israelis retaliated by shelling Shiite villages and guerrilla paths near the Lebanese town of Nabatiyeh, killing a Lebanese army sergeant and wounding a civilian man.
