Mailman aids La. Tech

RUSTON, La. (AP) - Utah Jazz star and former Louisiana Tech basketball player Karl Malone has donated more than $100,000 worth of weight training equipment to his alma mater.

He presented the equipment Tuesday night during a ceremony at the Joe Aillet Fieldhouse on the Tech campus.

"It's a great institution where I had a lot of great memories and, hopefully, what I've given here can help other athletes in their careers," Malone said.

7 qualify for State Am

CEDAR CITY - Daisuke Utsumi, a native of Japan, who lives in St. George, fired a 4-under-par 67 Monday to claim mdalist honors at the Dixie Region qualifying tournament for the Men's State Amateur.

While 14 of the 42 golfers shot par or better, only seven qualified for the State Am July 10-14 at Hobble Creek Golf Course.

The other six qualifiers were Ryan Oldroyd at 68, Tom Johnson at 69, Cameron Cowan at 69, Jared Barnes and Brad Hodges at 70 and Aaron Hansen and Garrett Hannig at 71.

Barkley remains the mouth that roars

SEATTLE (AP) - Charles Barkley tops the NBA's All-Interview team for the ninth time in 10 years.

The Phoenix star received 86 votes from writers and broadcasters who regularly cover the NBA. Voters were asked to make selections based on accessibility and ability to provide information and interesting quotes.

New Jersey's Jayson Williams was second with 45, followed by Chicago's Michael Jordan , Utah's Karl Malone and the Los Angeles Lakers' Magic Johnson . Seattle's George Karl was the top coach with 28.
