One potato, two potato, three potato, four, five potato, six potato - 44,000 more. Workers Tuesday clean up tons of sweet potatoes that were dumped in a Philadelphia parking lot by a well-meaning community activist. Crews spent most of the day shoveling the potatoes into garbage trucks. Liz Bacone, director of Community Associates of Strawberry Mansion, accepted the tons of tubers last week from a North Carolina charity for a neighborhood food giveaway. After six hot, humid days, the pile of spuds started to rot when not enough people took advantage of the free food. Bacone said a giveaway last year of 42,000 pounds of potatoes was successful, but this year just 500 people signed up.
