CAPTION WAS INACCURATE AND RUDE

"Dumb" and "dumber" were the words that first came to mind when I read with disbelief the caption to the picture of Daniel Boorstin (June 8) at the U's graduation ceremony. His outstretched hand, according to the News, was to "encourage more applause." Most of us in attendance, however, could see he was signaling his wife to stand and share the well-deserved applause.

What could the News hope to gain from such a disrespectful comment? Certainly not a lasting, good impression of Utah from an eminent scholar with degrees from Harvard, Yale and Oxford, whose address was thoughtful and wise and whose manner was reserved and self-effacing.Why risk offending a distinguished guest and causing the embarrassment that most of us feel when such a person is rudely insulted?
