THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH MARRIOTT LIBRARY will be the site of two intensive workshops in letterpress printing. The first runs June 17-28, the second July 8-19. Gene Valentine of Arizona State University and proprietor of Almond Tree Press will be the guest instructor. Classes will be held the school's Red Butte Press. Enrollment is limited. - A WOMAN'S PLACE BOOKSTORE in Foothill Village will feature Jerry Johnston reading from his book, "Spirits in the Leaves," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 18. - BRYAN DIETRICH and LINDSEY CRITTENDEN are the winners of the 1996 Writers at Work $1,500 first prizes in writing this year. Dietrich, a poet, is from Oklahoma. Crittenden lives in New York City. The awards also include tuition for afternoon sessions at the Park City conference (see today's Arts cover story).

- ORVILLE PRESCOTT, a former book critic for the New York Times, has died at his home in New Canaan, Conn. He was 89. From 1942 to 1966, Prescott wrote three or four reviews a week. Prescott also wrote several books, including "Princes of the Renaissance" and "Lords of Italy: Portraits from the Middle Ages."
