Police are calling the hanging death of a 14-year-old boy in Orem last week an accident.

Joseph Martin Dye was found hanging Friday in his garage. Orem Police Lt. Karl Hirst said detectives do not believe the death was a suicide because of the position in which Dye was found and the ligature marks on his neck. However, they are also ruling out homicide because there was no evidence of another person at the scene and no drag marks on the garage floor.

Detectives believe Dye was using rope to remove a go-cart from the garage attic when he became tangled in the rope. Hirst said the teen was mentally handicapped.

The state medical examiner's office conducted an autopsy and police were expected to learn the results late Monday.
