Theodore Kaczynski won't face state charges in four crimes in Utah because "John Doe" warrants were not filed in the Unabom cases before the statute of limitations expired on the cases.
District Attorney Neal Gunnarson said the Salt Lake County Attorney's Office filed no "John Doe" Unabom warrants.Salt Lake Police Sgt. Don Bell said it is too late for charges to be filed now under Kaczynski's name, including the 1987 bombing that critically injured a Salt Lake computer store owner, because generic charges were not filed earlier.
Utah FBI officials have said it's unlikely Kaczynski will ever be indicted or tried in Utah under a federal warrant because other states, like California that has two deaths, have far more serious crimes.
If convicted of the fatal bombings, Kaczynski could receive the federal death penalty, which was reinstated with the 1994 Federal Crime Bill.
