A TV soundman holds his head after suffering an injury when troops broke up a demonstration of the opposition Indonesian Democratic Party in Jakarta Thursday. Backed by armored cars, hundreds of soldiers swinging batons broke up the protest of about 5,000 opposition party activists. Protest leaders said 73 people were injured. The army denied using excessive force. The violence occurred after the demonstrators marched 2 1/2 miles through Jakarta to protest a military-backed congress of dissidents within the Indonesia Democratic Party. The dissidents want to oust party chief Megawati Sukarnoputri.
