A Republican congressional candidate criticized Rep. Bill Orton, D-Utah, saying he voted seven times against the GOP plan to balance the budget in seven years.

While the Republican efforts are open to criticism on several points, said Chris Cannon, they're the only proposals with a chance to pass.Cannon said Wednesday that Orton is a roadblock to obtaining a balanced budget. The budget plans Orton presented never had a significant chance of passing, he said.

Cannon said he advocates a plan that guarantees a balanced budget in seven years without raising taxes or comprising national security and social security. The plan must provide broad based tax relief, paid for with spending cuts, he said.
