A 16-year-old confined to the Salt Lake County Jail with a history of violence and criminal activity has been charged with assaulting a staff nurse at the jail.
Benjamin Eagle Dutchie, currently awaiting a trial for aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery, threw a cup "containing urine and fecal matter" at the nurse on Feb. 24 at the jail, 450 S. 300 East.Charges filed in 3rd Circuit Court Friday say investigators looked in and around Dutchie's cell and found a cup lying on the floor with fluid leading to Dutchie's cell.
Dutchie admitted in a statement to Salt Lake County sheriff's officials that he "gets upset with the jailers and sometimes `goes off,' " according to charges.
Dutchie faces one count of assault on a correctional officer, a class A misdemeanor for the incident. He remains in the Salt Lake County Jail.
Previously, Dutchie has been in and out of jail and youth detention. He first appeared before a judge when he was 9 years old for a shoplifting incident in Blanding, San Juan County, according to court records.
Since then, Dutchie has been charged with nearly 90 crimes throughout the state, including escape, aggravated sexual abuse of a child and auto theft.
Police say Dutchie broke into two Salt Lake homes in March 1995, kidnapped an elderly man and woman and forced them to withdraw money from automatic bank teller machines and fled with cash.
