Michael T. Roberts, a partner in the Ogden office of the law firm of Van Cott, Bagley, Cornwall & McCarthy, has been appointed chairman of the Utah State Martin Luther King Jr./Human Rights Commission.

In 1983, Congress passed a bill establishing a federal holiday honoring King, and in 1986 the Legislature passed a bill establishing a human rights day in Utah.In 1991, former Gov. Norm Bangerter signed an executive order establishing the commission in Utah to "encourage appropriate ceremonies and activities honoring this holiday, and to promote awareness of the principles of nonviolence and the respect for human rights for all."
