Sammy Hagar is out and David Lee Roth is back in as lead singer of Van Halen, at least temporarily.

The rock band announced Hagar's departure Wednesday and said Roth is rejoining the group to record a greatest hits album to be released this fall.Hagar said he left because of "creative differences."

"The greatest loss that I feel is for all of those that have been there for me, and I hope that I can pay them back," Hagar said in a statement.

Hagar, best known for his solo hit "I Can't Drive 55," became the band's front man in 1985 after Roth left to pursue a solo career.
