Salt Lake City police officers won't be filling in as substitute crossing guards next year, under a plan being considered by the City Council.

In the past, uniformed police officers acted as substitutes if a crossing guard didn't show up for duty at a city elementary school. The program was also administered by a police sergeant. The new plan would transfer the program to be part of the department of public services, allowing parking enforcement personnel to act as substitute crossing guards. The program will also be administered by Public Service employees, freeing up police Sgt. George Scarlet for other police issues.

The plan was presented before the City Council earlier this week. A final decision will be made Tuesday.
