A Gallup Poll asked people to name the richest American, and about one in five people (22 percent) said Bill Gates.
This public wisdom was in synch with the editors of Forbes magazine, who put Gates at No. 1 on its annual richest list. But Gallup runners-up were way off base. Ross Perot, Steve Forbes and Donald Trump each received 8 percent of the votes. Two percent of the respondents named Bill Clinton, who was tied with Michael Jackson, Warren Buffett (No. 2 on the Forbes list) and the Rocke-fel-lers.
After Gates and Buffett on Forbes list: John Kluge, Paul Allen and Sumner Redstone.
