It would be a shame indeed if another candidate for the 2nd Congressional District were allowed to buy the seat, as did Rep. Enid Greene and her estranged husband, Joe Waldholtz. Merrill Cook could sure dump a ton of money into yet another campaign for public office.

What is particularly discouraging is that Cook, with his ability to saturate airwaves with negative commercials and to conduct nightly polls gauging voter leanings, will only pervert meaningful discussion of issues significant to people in this district. While I don't agree with all the positions his opponent has taken, at least Ross Anderson is a candidate who stands up for what he believes. That's a trait all too rare in elected leaders today. I put greater trust in Anderson's ability to represent the views of his constituents because he's a straight shooter who listens and learns.

Meanwhile, I can't figure out if Cook is a Republican or a Republican basher. He certainly can't be taken at his word when he publicly declares his seventh race to be his last if the voters once more reject him. They did, but he's back. To send someone to Washington who equivocates so simply underscores for me why Congress these days is considered such a house of ill repute.

If we do elect Cook, we have only ourselves to blame for the potential embarrassment - again.
