Shifting winds and low humidity were expected to make firefighting difficult later Wednesday in Tooele County.

More than 300 crews were battling western desert wildfires that have blackened 36,000 acres since Monday."It looks like winds will pick up (Wednesday) afternoon, which could make things tough," said Salt Lake Interagency Fire Center spokeswoman Sharon Knowlton.

Still, firefighters are making progress. The lightning-sparked Davis Knolls fire is about 60 percent contained after burning 31,500 acres.

"There is still a potential for rapid fire runs because of conditions . . . We expect the fire to grow a little," said Knowlton.

Effective burnbacks have foiled flames that encroached on the tiny town of Terra, although the east side of Dugway is still in some danger.

Officials expect to use helicopter drops throughout the day, said Knowlton.

Crews hope to contain the Goshute fire sometime Wednesday.

The 4,500-acre blaze, burning near the Skull Valley Goshute Indian Reservation, destroyed a corral but has not threatened other structures.

Meanwhile, teams left Millard County wildfires Wednesday.

The Eight-Mile Fire near Scipio was declared under control Tuesday after burning 4,000 acres.

Crews also contained the 42,000-acre Sorenson Twin fire Tuesday, according to Richfield Interagency Fire spokeswoman Linda Jackson.

On Monday, lightning ignited a brush fire east of Milford that has burned 500 acres. Sixty people and several helicopters are battling that blaze, dubbed the Rock Corral fire.
