Workers place a covering over a heliostat telescope on the roof of Hansen Planetarium Tuesday. The new solar telescope will offer visitors stunning - and safe - views of the sun, planetarium officials promise. The telescope is designed to beam enlarged images of the sun down into the planetarium. "It's functional, but it's not fully operational yet," spokesman Patrick Wiggins said. Until now, whenever inclement weather threatened the electronics that drive the recently installed telescope, workers had to cover it with a tarp, which could blow off in a high wind. The new cover can open like an accordion to protect the device.
