An early morning fire destroyed a vacant South Salt Lake warehouse and blackened the exteriors of neighboring apartments - prompting the evacuation of several residents.
There were no injuries, but officials say Wednesday's blaze caused almost $115,000 in damage.Crews were called to the warehouse at 2250 S. 400 East about 1:30 a.m. after neighbors apparently spotted flames leaping from the structure.
"When we arrived, the warehouse was fully involved in fire," said South Salt Lake Fire Capt. John Nash.
After determining the building was empty, crews battled to keep the three-alarm blaze from spreading to the Townhouse Apartments II immediately east of the warehouse.
"We had some very intense moments, but everyone did a good job containing the fire," said Nash.
Flames did reach a few apartments but didn't damage interiors and most evacuees were able to return to their homes in a few hours, said Nash.
The warehouse was a total loss.
Almost 40 firefighters from four agencies doused the blaze in about 45 minutes, said Nash.
Officials say the fire was likely caused by an electrical problem, but a complete investigation is pending.
"We just don't know yet if (the fire) is suspicious," said Nash.
Last March, South Salt Lake leaders deemed the warehouse, which was once used to store and repair boats, unfit and unsafe for people.
The warehouse's tenant was ordered by the City Council to remove about three dozen old cars being stored inside.
