Boat fishing remains hot at Bear Lake along the east shoreline between 1st point and North Eden. Trolling rapalas, flatfish, daredevils and pop gear is producing 16-18 inch cutthroat near the surface. Trolling with lead-core line or downriggers in water 55'-75' deep is producing good lake trout catchs, with fish averaging 4 pounds.
BEAR RIVER - High water, but improving fishing. Good access for boat at our ramps. Some catfish showing up.EAST CANYON - Fishing is fair from boat slower from shore. Use pop gear and worm from boats and power bait from shore. Anglers are catching good size fish. Fish deeper water as temperature increases.
LOGAN RIVER - Fair fishing and should improve as water slows. Special regulations on upper section. Section up stream from Red Banks Bridge is closed until July 13th at 6 a.m. Impoundments have been stocked. Water is still high, use caution when wading.
OGDEN RIVER - Excellent for brown trout. Blue or green Vibrax and black Panther Martin spinners, worms and blue olive dunn flies work on the upper stretch. Lower river is fair fishing for rainbows using worms or salmon eggs, silver Vibrax spinners.
ROCKPORT - Fishing is improving. Water is flowing through the and fish have spilled into the river below the dam. There some big fish in the river including rainbows trout and bass. Perch are hitting well in the coves. Trolling for trout is fair. River flows are dropping so stream fishing is improving above and below the lake. Fair to good fishing overall.
UINTAS - Hoop lake is open to fishing. Has been stocked. Stateline, Bridge, and Marsh lakes are open. Mirror lake highway is open.
WEBER RIVER - Lower - High water and turbid, off color. Fishing slow, few fishermen. Few browns, some rainbows. Worms and dead minnows. Middle Weber - High water, muddy. Poor fishing. Stocked. Upper Weber - low and clear. Scuds for whitefish.
MOST waters have been stocked, including Silver Lake near Brighton, Big, Little, City Creek and Mill Creek streams.
STRAWBERRY - Fishing is good from boat tube and even shore. Many 4-pound rainbows are being caught and large cuts in shallow areas throughout the reservoir. Remember new regulations of 4 trout limit - only one longer than 18 inches. Dark colored leeches and wooly buggers in weedy shallow areas are producing nice rainbows. Pop-gear and worm combinations are catching some cutthroats lakewide. Other trolling lures have had success as well. Shore fishing has been spotty to good using power baits.
JORDANELLE - Fair fishing from shore/tube/boat. Success is fair to good. Shore fishing is a little less successful than other methods. Rainbow power bait has been the best bait. Pop gear and worm has worked for trollers. Crowded on weekends with some boaters being turned away due to maximum boat allowance on the reservoir. Please remember new regulation of only 4 trout. Minimum bass size is 12 inches.
UTAH LAKE - Still having reports of success for channel cats and white bass. Use bait tipped - white, yellow or chartreuse jigs or flashy small spinners for the white bass. Stink baits (with a little patience) may provide a nice catfish meal. It is important to have an unweighted line so the channel cats can run with your bait for a little distance.
DEER CREEK - Some decent reports of smallmouth bass success along the rocky shorelines using jigs or crank baits. Trollers are catching a few larger rainbows. Shore fishing has been slow except for a few areas such as Rainbow Bay. Trolling with pop gear and a threaded worm seems to be the best ticket for trout.
FLAMING GORGE - Excellent action for smallmouth bass, spawn just beginning in the canyon area. Good fishing from shore or boats for rainbow trout, fair to good for kokanee and slow for lake trout. Smallmouth at Flaming Gorge make a great kids fishery because they are extremely catchable. This abundant smallmouth bass population provides a good fishing opportunity during the summer. Try using 3-inch grubs and 4-inch rubber worms in crayfish colors. Fish in the rocky areas and along cliff faces. Most fish are small, but the does produce a few over two pounds. Keep all bass caught, up to your limit, to help increase the growth of remaining fish. Try brightly colored lures and dark jigs for rainbows and small bright lures for kokanee. Fly and bubble combinations, salmon eggs, nightcrawlers and power bait suspended off the bottom have also worked well for rainbows. Please check proclamation carefully for changes in regulations.
MANTI MOUNTAIN (in Carbon and Emery counties) - Benches Reservoir has been very good for anglers floating Powerbait off the bottom. Restocking took place last week. Boulger's was stocked last week. Cleveland was planted again during the week of June 10. Fishing has been fair. Duck Fork is now accessible with little fishing pressure. Stocking was scheduled during the week of June 24. Electric Lake is closed to fishing until July 13. Ferron was stocked for the first time during the week of June 10 and will be restocked after the 24th. Gooseberry was restocked during the week of June 17. Anglers have done well by floating Powerbait off the bottom. Grassy Lake will not be stocked until the inlet is repaired by the U.S. Forest Service, Ferron District.
JOE'S VALLEY - Fishing success has been slow from shore. Boats have done somewhat better. Anglers are reminded to release all splake less than 16-inches.
LAKE POWELL - Wayne Gustaveson, Lake Powell project leader reports that striped bass fishing is expected to improve with warming water. Larger stripers need to be in cool water which will be 40-60 feet deep. Wayne suggests trying anchovies along steep canyon walls in the main channel. He recommends using a fish finder. Once located, a school can be stimulated to feed by broadcasting small pieces of anchovies all around the boat. An unweighted, one-inch chunk of anchovy, allowed to free-fall along with the anchovy chum, is too tempting for a striper to pass up. Larger stripers from 4-10 pounds will be taken both by trollers using down riggers or those dropping anchovies 40-60 feet. Smallmouth and bluegill fishing has been good, especially in the early morning. At first light, surface lures work well along sloping shorelines, points and brushy coves. After the sun comes up, anglers should probe coves and canyons with 2-inch grubs on 1/32 ounce lead heads in 5-10 feet of water. Larger grubs, fished deeper, produces bigger fish but the action is slower.
FISH LAKE - Excellent fishing for rainbow trout, good for splake. Trolling, bait fishing, jigging - all of it will work now. Some lake trout still being taken by trolling along west shore. Yellow perch also provide an easy fish to get kids started on. Try a small piece of worm below a bobber or with a jig along the outside edge of the weed beds.
BOULDER MOUNTAIN LAKES - Access is good. These lakes are generally good when they open up.
Pineview is closed to the possession of tiger muskellunge. Catchable Rainbows have been stocked in most flat waters. Stream systems will be stocked as run off subsides. Ogden Areas toll-free number for statewide wildlife information-- 479-0990 or specific fishing information 1-800-ASK-FISH.
