European Ryder Cup teammates Colin Montgomerie and Ian Woosnam shot 2-under-par 70s Wednesday to share the lead after the wind-swept first round of the Scottish Open.

Montgomerie, the leader on the European money list and the winner last week of the Irish Open, was the only player in the 156-man field to finish without a bogey on his card.Montgomerie picked up 16 pars and two birdies and - like Woosnam - took advantage of play early in the day before the winds kicked up.

No Scot has ever won this tournament, and Montgomerie would like to be the first.

Five players were one stroke back on the 7,246-yard course - Paul Lawrie, Paul Broadhurst, and David J. Russell of England, Robert Allenby of Australia and Jose Rivero of Spain.

European Ryder players Sam Torrance and Costantino Rocca had 76s, as did South African Ernie Els.
