The city's planned administration building grew about 20 percent Tuesday, when the City Council agreed to a 7,200-square-foot facility.
The enlarged plan increases work space and adds 30 seats to the council chambers for a total of 120. The new City Center plan includes an unfinished basement that can be used for future expansion or for a library. The council chambers could become a multipurpose room for a variety of functions, said Councilman Jim Dain, who designed the structure at no charge. The design would allow two separate functions to be held at the same time if the city rented out the building, he said. The council chambers are already planned to double as a mu-nic-ipal courtroom.
The building is to be constructed on the upper ball field south of Lindon City Park. Earlier this year the city formed a Municipal Building Authority, which allows it to sell bonds to construct the edifice without going to an election. The council also put a $1 million lid on the building, although an original estimate said it would cost about $600,000 to build.
Construction could begin this year.
