A Murray businessman who pleaded guilty in May to a federal parole violation was sentenced Thursday to three years probation and fined $10,000.
U.S. District Judge David Sam also ordered Jackie Lee Byrd to serve six months of the probation in home confinement with electronic monitoring.Byrd, 51, was convicted of attempted criminal homicide and placed on probation in 1982 after wounding two Salt Lake County deputies in a shootout outside St. Mark's Hospital. His parole in that case included a condition barring him from possessing firearms.
However, he admitted in federal court in May that he had purchased four weapons at an auction in 1991. Sam could have sentenced Byrd to 10 years in prison plus $250,000 in fines.
In 1992, Byrd, owner of B&B Auto, was charged with the shooting death of Michael Anderson, 27, at a Murray bar. A jury found him not guilty following a two-week trial in 3rd District Court earlier this year.
