Dr. Ulrich R. Bryner, 94, well-known physician and founder of the Bryner Clinic, died Tuesday at a son's home in Sandy, a few weeks after suffering a stroke.

He began practicing medicine in Salt Lake City in 1933 and established the Bryner Clinic a few years later. A new clinic was built in 1963 at its present location on 300 South.Dr. Bryner was born in Lund, Nev., in 1902. After moving to Utah in 1926 he completed three years of premedical training while working full time as a florist. He studied three years at the University of Utah Medical School and later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1932.

He was chief of staff at LDS Hospital, co-founder and president of the American Academy of General Practice, president of the Utah and Salt Lake County Medical Associations and secretary-treasurer of the World Medical Association. In 1950 he spent two months in England with an American Medical Association committee studying socialized medicine. While there he formed a close friendship with Sir Alexander Fleming, discoverer of penicillin.

Dr. Bryner and his wife, the late Virginia Castleton, were married in 1930 in the Salt Lake Temple. He served as a bishop's counselor and in other church positions.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Emigration 21st Ward chapel, 2nd Avenue and K Street. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Larkin Mortuary, 230 E. South Temple, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
