The nepotism hiring policy for classified employees in the Nebo School District became less stringent Wednesday.

The school board limited the definition of "relative" to the immediate family. Previously it included aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws.But Board President LaMar Wilson said that was too stringent because so many people in the district were related. Operations Manager Brent Hawkins said that problem was already showing up, making it difficult to find entry level workers who weren't related to someone already employed by the district.

The school board approved the current nepotism policy, which was more stringent than the state code, last March. The policy makes exceptions if an individual is the only qualified person for the job or if the individual is a temporary hire and will work only up to six weeks.
