Considering the general feelings of taxpayers and voters toward reducing both private property taxes and government bureaucracy, I was utterly amazed that the Salt Lake City Council and Mayor Deedee Corradini passed the restrictive rental ordinance June 11 affecting rentals of up to four units.

This ordinance both increased taxes (license fee) on private rental property and added a new layer of city bureaucracy.During the public hearing on the ordinance, the vast majority of property owners present registered disapproval. Still the mayor and council ran roughshod over property owners and passed the ordinance.

This ordinance needs more public input and reconsideration by the mayor and council before it goes into effect Oct. 1.

Those leaders should apologize for the arrogant manner in which this matter was handled at the public hearing. This city needs a more user-friendly mayor and council.
