Delmar La Grant Jr. leans over a bulkhead in Sandbridge, Va., to attach a support as a wave crashes against it while his son, Delmar La Grant II, holds his legs. The two were doing a routine repair job on the bulkhead but hurried up their work Thursday in anticipation of Hurricane Bertha. The hurricane lashed the Carolina coast Friday, its fierce wind ripping apart roofs, smashing windows and flinging debris sideways as its leading edge raked across fragile barrier islands. The eye will likely make landfall Friday evening.
