IRVIN TRIAL: Although three people were with him the night of March 4, the fingerprints of only one, Michael Irvin, besides police officers could be identified on drug paraphernalia found in their motel room, an officer testified.

Irvin is charged with second-degree felony cocaine possession, with punishment ranging from probation to 20 years in prison.

The discussion of whether and where Irvin's fingerprints appeared and whether police properly handled evidence took up most of the sixth day of testimony.

MORRIS SENTENCE: Bam Morris, the leading rusher in the Super Bowl, was sentenced to six years' deferred adjudication and fined $7,000 for a March 22 felony marijuana possession charge.

He changed his plea to guilty in exchange for a recommendation of no prison time and dismissal of a felony cocaine possession charge.

He was also sentenced to 200 hours of community service. The deferred adjudication means the drug charges eventually will be removed from records.

The Pittsburgh Steelers released Morris earlier this week.

THOMAS' ARREST: Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Lamar Thomas was charged with battery against his pregnant fiancee and spent a night in jail.

Thomas, 26, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery for separate incidents on July 4 involving Ebony Cooksey, 22. He was released on $10,000 bond.

Golf

PGA: Scott Hoch shot a 7-under-par 64 for a one-shot lead after the first round of the Michelob Championship at Williamsburg, Va., which was bracing for a visit from Hurricane Bertha.

Hoch had eight birdies over the 6,797-yard River Course at Kingsmill Golf Club. Curtis Strange and Fred Funk shot 65s. Strange had seven birdies, including four in a span of five holes.

PGA Tour and tournament officials met several times to keep tabs on Bertha and update contingency plans in case of bad weather.

Larry Rinker, Tom Purtzer, Jeff Julian and Frank Lickliter were at 66, with seven others at 67. Defending champion Ted Tryba shot a 70, and two-time winner Mark McCumber posted a 68.

SENIORS: Tom Weiskopf shot a 6-under-par 66 for a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Senior Players Championship at Dearborn, Mich.

Bob Charles and Lee Trevino were at 67 in the last major of the year on the senior tour.

Weiskopf, who has won two senior events this year, carded six birdies and an eagle-3 on the 542-yard seventh hole.

Gibby Gilbert, John Bland and Bruce Summerhays were at 68. Defending champion J.C. Snead finished at 72. Dave Stockton, who won last week's Senior Open, shot a 74.

SCOTTISH OPEN: Jay Townsend had a par-72 to share the second-round lead in the windswept Scottish Open at Carnoustie, Scotland.

The American had a total of 144 and shared the lead with England's Russell Claydon and Ian Woosnam . First-round leader Colin Montgomerie shot a 77 and was three back.

MILLER LITE HALL OF FAME: Third-seeded Michael Joyce, trailing 6-4, 1-0, retired from his second-round match with Nicolas Pereira of Venezuela after straining his right pectoral muscle at the Miller Lite Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, R.I.

Sixth-seeded Martin Damm of the Czech Republic was ousted by Russian Andrei Olhovskiy 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4).

In quarterfinal matches, Daniel Nestor of Canada outlasted Marcos Ondruska of South Africa 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 and Grant Stafford defeated fellow South African David Nainkin 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.

SWISS OPEN: Top-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia defeated Karim Alami of Morocco 6-3, 6-3 to move into the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open in Gstaad, Switzerland.

In other second-round matches, Alberto Berasategui downed fellow Spaniard, eight-seeded Carlos Moya 7-5, 6-2; sixth-seeded Alberto Costa of Spain outlasted Argentina's Hernan Gumy 6-3, 4-6, 6-4; Italian Renzo Furlan beat Germany's Oliver Gross 6-0, 5-7, 6-2; Sergi Bruguera topped fellow Spaniard Emilio Sanchez 6-2, 6-3.

SWISS OPEN: Top-seeded Stefan Edberg beat qualifier Lars Jonsson 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of his final Swedish Open in Bastad, Sweden.

Thomas Johansson defeated qualifier Thomas Nydahl in another all-Swedish matchup, 7-5, 6-0.

In other second-round matches, fifth-seeded Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine beat Magnus Norman of Sweden 6-4, 6-4, and Galo Blanco of Spain ousted Swedish wild-card Patrik Fredriksson 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Cycling

TOUR DE FRANCE: Colombian Chepe Gonzalez, won the 125-mile 11th stage of the Tour de France at Valence, France, and Denmark's Bjarne Riis held the overall lead.

Five-time defending champion Miguel Indurain remained eighth overall after finishing with the main pack of riders, 2 minutes, 51 seconds behind Gonzalez. The Spaniard was 4 minutes, 38 seconds behind Riis.

Russian Yevgeny Berzin held second, 40 seconds behind.

2 CARDS CUT: Two Louisville football players were stripped of their scholarships and suspended indefinitely after a drug arrest.

Guards Jeryl Tyson, a senior, and Ikem Maduaka-Cain, a sophomore, were arrested at their apartment, where police discovered five pounds of marijuana and other drugs.

Tyson, 21, and Maduaka-Cain, 19, were each charged with trafficking marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.
