Minnesota Twins star Kirby Puckett hopes to learn soon whether his latest eye surgery will allow him to play baseball again.

Puckett was scheduled to undergo a surgical procedure in Baltimore today to remove the jellylike substance in his right eye known as the vitreous, into which blood had leaked, obscuring his retina. His doctors expected the procedure, called a vitrectomy, would give them a clearer view of his retina and allow them to gauge the effect of the three laser surgeries performed earlier.

The surgical procedure involves making three incisions in the eye. A needle inserted through one slit draws out blood and vitreous from inside the eye, while a needle through the other slit injects a salt solution to replace the removed material. The other opening is for a tiny fiber-optic light.
