Two Utah County residents walked away from the wreckage of a homemade aircraft Thursday after the plane made a rough emergency landing in a field.

The pilot and owner of the single-engine experimental plane, Ardath K. Chipman, 53, Springville, had taken off from the Spanish Fork Airport, said Utah County Sheriff's Lt. Ron Fernstedt. In the airplane with Chipman was Ted Osborne, 24, Provo. Osborne reportedly was considering buying the airplane from Chipman.

About 10:30 a.m., the aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in a field at 5300 S. 3200 West.

The homemade airplane came in nose-heavy and crushed its landing gear on impact, Fernstedt said. After sliding along the ground, the aircraft flipped over and came to rest on its top.

Both Chipman and Osborne sustained minor cuts and abrasions.
