On a holiday weekend that turned deadly, five people, including two children and one tourist, were killed and one was injured in five accidents throughout the state.

Killed were:Christopher E. Howe, 5, Midvale.

Kristian Grizelj, 21, Suffern, N.Y.

Dennis Muita Kalini, 21, Salt Lake City.

Jeff Barton, 19, Sandy.

Keaton Williams, 2, Kaysville.

- Officials at Bear Lake State Park said Howe died at 8 a.m. Sunday at Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City as a result of head injuries sustained in a Saturday afternoon boating accident.

The accident occurred when two boats rammed each other at the popular Ideal Beach Marina near Garden City about 5:30 p.m. July 6, perhaps the busiest day of the year for Bear Lake, said Mary Tullius, a spokeswoman with Utah State Parks and Recreation.

Rich County medical personnel and state park rangers responded to the accident, and the boy was flown to PCMC, where he later died from head injuries. He was wearing a personal floatation device at the time of the collision, Tullius said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident and state park officials are investigating.

- Grizelj, from New York state, died of apparent heat exhaustion Sunday while biking the Slickrock Trail near Moab in Grand County.

Sheriff's officials said Grizelj collapsed just a mile away from water and shade about 3:30 p.m. Temperatures in eastern Utah reached 104 degrees Sunday.

Lack of water and experience led to the man's death, according to a sheriff's report. He was a mile from a parking lot at the trailhead at the time, the sheriff's office reported.

Grizelj was taken to Allen Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead, authorities said.

- Kalini died Sunday morning from injuries sustained after being ejected from his car near 550 South in the southbound lane of I-15, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Dan Catlin said.

Kalini was northbound about 2:30 a.m. when he attempted to change lanes, but he lost control, crossed the median and rolled, Catlin said. He was ejected on impact and transported to LDS Hospital, where he died.

An autopsy showed Kalini died from head injuries, Catlin said.

Deshawn Brown, 26, one of three passengers inside the car at the time, was in satisfactory condition Monday at University Hospital, recovering from a head injury.

- Barton, from Sandy, died Sunday afternoon after taking a 30-foot fall while climbing at North Mill in American Fork Canyon.

He was climbing with a friend on a rock face about 12:40 p.m. when the accident occurred, said Utah County sheriff's Lt. Ron Fernstedt. Barton was transported to American Fork Hospital with head and back injuries, Fernstedt said.

Barton was then flown to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, where he died.

- Williams drowned Saturday when he fell into a swimming pool at the family home on Mutton Hollow Road. The boy was taken to Primary Children's Medical Center after the 5 p.m. incident and died Sunday morning.

Paramedics from the Davis County Sheriff's Office responded to the accident but were not able to revive the boy. Doctors at PCMC were able to restart his heart, paramedics reported, but said the prognosis was poor.

Medical personnel said they weren't sure how long the boy was in the pool. The boy's 12-year-old sister found him, pulled him out, and called 911.
