Salt Lake County Sheriff Aaron D. Kennard was elected to a high-level management position of the National Sheriffs Association during the association's 1996 conference in June.
It's been more than 20 years since a sheriff in a Western state was elected to a management position. Kennard was elected sergeant-at-arms, and it's a post that means he'll most likely progress to the top of the organ-i-za-tion.Kennard expects to progress through five vice-president positions until he becomes president of NSA, which is the professional association that serves sheriffs nationwide.
The group has been instrumental in lobbying on behalf of sheriffs departments on crime and law enforcement issues.
