A Western lowland gorilla is a new attraction at Hogle Zoo and companion for Dan, the only male gorilla at the zoo.
The 31-year-old named Muke (pronounced Mooki) was recently received on loan from The Zoo in Gulf Breeze, Fla., to be a companion for Dan, 26, for whom zoo officials have sought a companion since Tino, the zoo's other male gorilla, was moved to the Bronx Zoo on a breeding loan last October.Officials say it takes time to identify a prospective companion and to make arrangements to receive the animal.
Tino was moved to the New York zoo as part of Hogle Zoo's involvement in the Gorilla Species Survival Plan, with the assurance that the zoo would receive a companion for Dan, said zoo general curator Kimberly Davidson.
Muke has been moved to five different facilities in search of a perfect male companion. She has a "wonderful personality, is very sweet and personable. She's been around a lot of gorillas in the past. So she's developed the patience necessary for changes associated with moves and introduction to new animals," Davidson said.
As part of the zoo's involvement in the survival plan, a captive breeding program for endangered species, zoo officials hope to receive another female for Dan when one becomes available.
Muke and Dan are being introduced slowly to each other during the next few weeks as keepers raise a plexiglas door between animal exhibits in the Great Apes Building. The two animals will first be able to see each other, then touch fingers and finally, over time, be able to fully contact each other.
To help Muke adjust to her new surroundings and animal care staff, Great Apes staff have been participating in a number of activities and games. One of Muke's favorite games is "swap," in which she will swap blankets, bowls or other items with her keepers in exchange for other items.
"It's a game that she can play for hours at a time. She'll keep handing things back to us when we give her something," said Great Apes supervisor Bob Pratt. He said the game helps Muke become familiar with the staff and provides enrichment until she is completely introduced to Dan. Pratt said Muke is very fond of picture magazines, hats and clothing.
