The incredible traffic congestion caused by the rebuilding of the bridge structure on eastbound I-80 at 2700 East will get some early relief as one lane of I-80 was scheduled to be reopened late Monday.

The Utah Department of Transportation originally said eastbound I-80 would be completely closed until Aug. 26. But thanks to what a UDOT spokesman termed "an aggressive repair schedule, and the cooperation of all parties involved . . ." enough work has been completed to partially open the freeway a week early.A ribbon-cutting ceremony was scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the bridge site, after which one lane was scheduled to be opened in time for the evening commute.

UDOT said the contractor poured the new bridge deck on Thursday, using a quick-cure concrete designed to set in 72 hours. Tests performed Monday morning showed the deck has reached sufficient strength to allow traffic on one lane.

One lane will remain closed until crews complete the repairs. All lanes are expected to be open by Labor Day, Sept. 2.
