New Yorkers who miss watching Magic Johnson play basketball will soon be able to watch movies in his theater.
An 11-screen Magic Johnson Theater will anchor an $80 million retail and entertainment complex in the Jamaica section of Queens, city officials announced Thursday. The project is expected to create approximately 650 new jobs in the predominantly black neighborhood.
"This is an under-served area that we feel has great potential for success," Johnson said.
Johnson founded his company, a partnership with Sony Retail Entertainment, to develop first-run movie theaters in minority neighborhoods.
