Sixty years after he started his career in Bismarck, N.D., conductor Skitch Henderson is going back.
Henderson, the 78-year-old music director of the New York Pops, played piano in Bismarck with the Henry Turner Orchestra in 1936. On Sept. 7 and 8, he will return for a Bismarck-Mandan Symphony fund-raiser."I remembered this being a place where I started as a professional," Henderson said. "I thought maybe it's time to pay some dues. It's strange how life comes back together."
Frank McGinnis, a retired drummer who played with Henderson in the Turner orchestra, also will be in town. Henderson is writing an autobiography and hopes McGinnis can help him.
"I hope he can fill in some things that are kind of fuzzy," Henderson said. "I've lived so many lives since then."
