Jason Gonzalez hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Orem upset three-time defending champion Taylorsville 2-1 in the first round of the American Legion baseball tournament Saturday.James England allowed five hits in eight innings for Orem, which advances in the winner's bracket of the 16-team, double-elimination tourney. Bonneville 12, Jordan 9: Gregg Shimada went 5-for-5 with three RBI and scored twice as Bonneville beat Jordan in a slugfest.
Roosevelt 7, Cottonwood 6: Ben Malnar blasted a two-run homer and Clint Gardner drove in the winning run as Roosevelt scored three times in the seventh for the win.
Skyline 6, Brigham City 5: Ryan Lindberg scored on David Keith's squeeze bunt as Skyline rallied in the seventh for the victory.
Hillcrest 8, St. George 5: Mike Gargano struck out nine St. George batters and Monte Ruttenbur had two doubles and two RBI for Hillcrest.
Clearfield 7, Kearns 6: Ben Nelson hit a two-run dinger as Clearfield scored four times in the sixth inning to edge Kearns.
