South Davis County residents were left with limited phone access Saturday night when a major computer switching system in Bountiful went down at about 7:30 p.m.

The system breakdown affected about 31,000 phone lines in Bountiful, Centerville and North Salt Lake, said Duane Cooke, a US WEST spokesman. Residents with phone numbers that begin with 292, 295, 296, 298 and 299 had a dial tone but could not dial outside that area, he said. After dialing a number, residents would get a dial tone again, and people who called in to one of those prefixes could not get through, he said.

Residents could still call other people within that isolated area, operators and 911, Cooke said.

Company technicians were on site trying to find and correct the problem, Cooke said, but an estimated time for restoration had not been set.

"We hope to have the problem corrected this evening or early tomorrow morning," he said. "It depends on exactly what needs to be done to correct the problem."
